Saving Shelter Cats with FIP: Harmony FIPS Meds’ Commitment to Rescue

A recent article by the University of Florida's Shelter Medicine Program, "Saving Shelter Cats with FIP: Innovative Treatment Strategies," highlights groundbreaking efforts in treating Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) in shelter cats. Historically considered fatal, FIP now has a cure thanks to antiviral medications like GS-441524.

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) has been at the forefront of FIP treatment, collaborating with the University of Florida to study treatment responses in shelter cats, including those co-infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). The study underscores the challenges of treating FIP in shelter environments and the importance of accessible, effective treatment strategies.

Harmony’s Role in the Study and FIP Rescue

At Harmony FIPS Meds, we are proud to have played a key role in this initiative. Not only did we provide the GS-441524 used in the study, but we originally approached APA! in 2021 to help them establish their FIP rescue program. Since then, Harmony has continued working closely with APA!, providing free FIP treatment for hundreds of rescue cats. Today, APA!’s FIP program is one of the largest in the U.S., offering life-saving treatment to cats who otherwise would not have had a chance.

Our mission has always been to ensure that no cat suffers from a once-deadly disease that now has a cure. We are honored to support APA! and 100+ other rescue organizations in the fight against FIP and will continue working to expand treatment accessibility for all cats in need.
